Monica Lopez De Victoria

Monica Lopez De Victoria (b. 1980, Miami, FL) is a multi-disciplinary artist and performer in Artistic (Synchronized) Swimming. For two decades she has woven these two art forms together. Monica works in multi-media realms of digital video, site specific installations, sculpture, costume pieces, performance, collages, video games, textiles, and VJing. Her techno, tropical aesthetic shines deep in the art work along with her do-it-yourself ethic started by being home schooled on the sands of South Florida. Monica’s colorful geometric interplay visualizes the unseen layers of energetic phenomenons that hold spiritual and emotional presence. She investigates movement and space in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th dimensions, rippling inward and outward. The majority of Monica’s art career has been collaborating with her sister Natasha Lopez De Victoria as the TM Sisters. Their work has been featured in international exhibitions and touring performances such as "Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium" curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. Kvaran, SiTE:LAB curated by Paul Amenta, UNTITLED Art Fair curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud, the Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, and PERFORMA created by Roselee Goldberg. She has worked on many large scale public artworks and significant corporate commissions such as Lacoste, Becks, BMW, bebe, and III Points music festival, always finding connection points between fashion, entertainment, nightlife, design, art, technology, sports, and music. The work has been seen and written about in L’Officiel magazine, The Guardian, STEP Inside Design, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Vogue Italia, and on the cover of ARTnews magazine. Monica is also an internationally-recognized synchronized swimmer. Growing up in Miami, she swam competitively for ten years with the Dade-County Blue Sharkettes, before performing professionally with the Dolphinettes and the Miami branch of the L.A.-based Aqualillies, which she founded. Her swimming and choreography have been featured in National Geographic, Disney, VH1, Nickelodeon, the tv series Magic City, NADA Art Fair, and the MTV Music Video Awards, and she has performed with Sean Paul, RuPaul, and Katy Perry. She directs Verso Performance, an experimental synchronized swimming performance group she founded in 2009 that is focused on combining the athleticism of synchronized swimming with a visual/theatrical art practice. Nominated and supported by the Bauhaus Foundation, Monica has just come back from South Korea from an exchange artist residency with the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea. She had been an artist at the Bauhaus residency in 2018 staying in Master Haus Schlemmer in Dessau, Germany. Her time there concluded in an exhibition currently on view in Haus Gropius honoring the Bauhaus Foundation’s centennial year. Monica is now diving further into the glittering waterscape of her visual language – charged with electrifying color and geometry – to deeply explore her interests in physics, psychology, nature, spirituality and her home: Miami.
